Abstract

Our first concern in writing this book was to draw together the main observations from the very scattered published accounts of sandstone geomorphology, and to add to them our own field observations. In this sense our efforts can be seen as a sequel to to the foundations laid in Mainguet’s admirable monograph. Providing a much broader geographical range of examples was, therefore, the obvious task to be tackled, and we have attempted to do this both by drawing on available accounts from diverse sources and by making field observations in varied climatic and geologic settings. As pragmatic as this aim was, it led, seemingly inevitably, to a reassessment of methodological issues.
