Part of the book series: Progress in Botany/Fortschritte der Botanik ((BOTANY,volume 52))

Abstract

The last contribution to the subject dealt with the replication of the chromosome of Escherichia coli (Eichenlaub 1989). Naturally, E. coli, its plasmids, and phages are well- studied systems (Romberg 1980, 1982), however, the detailed information on the various aspects of replication gained here pose the question whether it is possible to generalize beyond the enterobacteria and related organisms. Therefore, the intention of the present report is to introduce the reader to what is known about replication in non-2s. coli organisms. Since this would inevitably mean dealing with a puzzling mosaic of information, I will focus mainly on the replication of the Bacillus subtilis chromosome and plasmids which replicate via a single-stranded DNA intermediate.
