Immediate and Late Type Allergy to Latex: Contact Urticaria, Asthma and Contact Dermatitis

  • Conference paper
Current Topics in Contact Dermatitis

Summary

A growing number of case reports of IgE-mediated contact urticaria to rubber latex are being published. The present case concerns a combined immediate and late type allergy to latex: an 8-year-old boy with atopic background (eczema of the flexures 6 months previously) developed generalized urticaria after contact with rubber balloons. Upon blowing up a rubber balloon, once, asthma occurred. A scratch test showed an immediate wheal and flare response (20 min) with ruber balloons and latex gloves, but not with vinyl gloves. Latex RAST ELISA was positive. Patch tests with rubber latex pieces showed no immediate reaction (20 min), but a marked eczema (+ + +) after 48 and 72 h. Patch testing with a rubber ingredients test series was negative. Possible pathomechanisms are discussed.
