Abstract
A reactive scalar mixing layer in grid turbulence where two species react with each other under isothermal conditions is studied experimentally. Simultaneous time-resolved measurements of velocity and gas composition are made using hot-wire anemometry and chemiluminescent analysers. The results are shown to lie within the bounds given by the limiting cases of frozen and equilibrium chemistry. The turbulent cross-correlation between the reactant concentrations is measured and is shown to be of major importance in determining the mean reaction rate.
