Abstract

Sediments are increasingly recognized as both a carrier and a possible source of contaminants in aquatic systems. Pollutants are not necessarily fixed permanently by sediment, but may be recycled via biological and chemical agents, both within the sedimentary compartment and the water column (see Kersten, this Vol.). This is especially valid for “dredged materials”. As shipping demands minimal water action or current within the harbor basins, this means that optimal conditions have been created for the sedimentation of river or sea-borne material. In order to keep these ports and channels accessible to (marine) shipping, this material has to be removed regularly by dredging (Van Driel et al. 1984).
