Types of Clinical Suicide

  • Conference paper
Current Issues of Suicidology

Abstract

A considerable increase in clinical suicides has been registered over the last 10–20 years in Europe (Ernst and Kern 1974; Loennqvist et al. 1974; Retterstøl 1978; Modestin 1982; Wolfersdorf et al. 1984). Accordingly, psychiatric hospital inpatients were designated in 1982 by the WHO as a special group “meriting particular attention for the improvement or development of methods of care to prevent suicide.” To meet these requirements, an improved knowledge of characteristics of certain groups of clinical suicides is desirable, as it could enable more specific therapeutic actions to be taken.
