Abstract
“Le Bayoud” (the name Bayoud comes from the Arabic word “abiadh”, meaning white, which refers to the whitening of the fonds of diseased trees - Djerbi, 1983) is the most serious cryptogamic disease of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.). The problem occurred for the first time in the Drâa Valley in Marocco, and was already recognized in a few foci before 1870. Only in 1921, the causal relation with a fungal infection was made, and the isolated fungus was identified as Neocosmospora vasinfecta. In 1930 the fungus was described as Cylindrophora albedinis, and after the detection of macroconidia and chlamydospores (1934), a new classification was made as Fusarium albedinis. The current designation of the fungus is: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis (Malancon) Snyd. et Hans (Kada and Dubost 1975; Saadi 1979; Djerbi 1983).
