Abstract
This introduction to the regional geology of the two lignite mining districts (the central German district and the Lusatian district) in eastern Germany is a condensed synopsis to provide basic information to those unfamiliar with the region’s geological conditions. It is intended to highlight the geological background and the composition of the lignite-bearing Tertiary sequences. A number of facts have been simplified in order to illustrate the characteristics of the two mining districts.
