Abstract
The neutrino mass problem of superstring models is discussed and possible solutions are identified. I focus on models with intermediate scales where the gauge group below the Planck scale is restricted. Models in which light E 6 singlets survive after compactification are shown to give rise to new mechanisms of understanding small neutrino masses while avoiding fast proton decay. I also briefly discuss a recently proposed solution to the solar neutrino problem involving the oscillation of the electron neutrino into a new sterile lepton predicted in the superstring theory.
