Abstract
The role which glucagon plays in the regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism is still not fully understood. Apart from early childhood, where glucagon seems to play a vital role in preventing hypoglycemia, it remains an enigma to what extent glucagon participates in maintaining normoglycemia in health and disease. Thus, in insulin-treated diabetics, insulin-induced hypoglycemia has been described as being defective, absent, or near normal. The role which glucagon may play in the development and maintenance of hyperglycemia in diabetes likewise remains a controversy, as some investigations report hyperglucagonemia while others find normal glucagon levels. A number of these differences may be apparent and caused by the use of glucagon antibodies with poorly defined specificity. Such antibodies when used in glucagon radioimmunoassays may yield different basal, as well as stimulated, levels of glucagon-like immunoreactivity (GLI).
