Abstract

In this paper a system of hypotheses is presented about the integration of thinking processes into a general organizational schema of human behavior. The general organizational schema of behavior consists of three basic behavioral components and their interactions, namely, orientation behavior, monitoring behavior, and effect-directed behavior. The regulari ties of these forms of behavior are discussed. Thinking is the most developed form of effect-directed behavior. The root and core of human thinking is an internal simulation of external behavior. The conditions for the autonomy of thinking as internal ized behavior are discussed. The standard of thinking is strongly dependent on the extent of control which the subject estimates that he has over his environment. This paper shows how this judgment of actual competence influences the processes and forms of thinking.

I would like to dedicate this paper to Professor H. Wegeneer, University of Kiel, on his 60th birthday.
