Zusammenfassung
Die Kopfregion der Wirbeltiere muß eine große Anzahl besonderer Funktionen übernehmen und ist daher Träger spezialisierter Organe. Sie unterscheidet sich im Aufbau grundsätzlich vom Rumpf. Das rostrale Körperende geht bei bilateral symmetrischen Organismen am frühesten Kontakt mit der Umwelt ein. So ist es verständlich, daß sich die großen Fernsinnesorgane (Riechorgan, Sehorgan) hier lokalisieren. Am vorderen Körperende liegen ferner die Öffnungen des Darmtraktes und der Atmungsorgane. Mit der Ausbildung leistungsfähiger Kontroll- und Steuersysteme (zentralisiertes Nervensystem) bildet sich hier eine umfangreiche Konzentration nervöser Zentren aus. Diese umfaßt die primären Riech- und Sehzentren, dann auch die Kontrollzentren für den Anfangsteil des Darmkanals (Geschmackssinn) und schließlich übergeordnete Assoziations-, Befehls- und Integrationsgebiete. Der Kopf wird zum Träger des Gehirnes.
