Current Problems in the Regulation of Nitrogen Metabolism in Plant Cell Cultures

Plant Tissue Culture and Its Bio-technological Application

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

A discussion of regulation in plant cell cultures should be based on our current knowledge of regulation in all living systems. However, because of the extent of knowledge, a survey of regulation in living systems is a Herculean task, which space does not permit. Current knowledge of regulation is the result of the immense amount of work with microorganisms which forms the basis of biochemistry, molecular biology, microbial genetics and microbial physiology. We have a contrast between the highly developed information base which exists for procaryotic microorganisms and the rudimentary base of information which currently exists for cells from plants treated as microorganisms. It is my conviction that the information base for plant cells treated as microorganisms, is rapidly and very profitably expanding. This article will identify areas of regulation in plant cell culture which seem to be susceptible to experimental investigation at this time. In this effort, the areas of nitrogen nutrition and nitrogen metabolism will be of main interest. It is hoped that the reader will be able to translate the ideas into other areas of plant cell culture.
