The Effect of THAM on Acute Intracranial Hypertension. An Experimental and Clinical Study

  • Conference paper
Intracranial Pressure III

Abstract

Brain tissue acidosis due to hypoxia may exist in the case of intracranial hypertension. Increased hydrogen ion concentration produces reduction in the vasoconstrictor tone resulting in an enlarged vascular bed that increases intracranial pressure (ICP), which makes a vicious cycle. DOS and coworkers (2) reported that an adequate maintenance of pH with an alkalizing agent, Trishydroxymethylamino methane (THAM), helped to prevent elevation of ICP in cases of hypercapnia due to apneic oxygenation. In the present study, we investigated the effects of alkalizing agents, mainly THAM, on acute intracranial hypertension in experimental animals and clinical cases.
