Abstract
The recognition of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) as a treatable form of dementia (2, 5) was followed by an early period of enthusiasm; but afterward, disappointing results of surgical therapy in some cases (3) and shunt-related complications (18) were more and more frequently reported. For these reasons, re-evaluation of the diagnostic criteria (13) is needed and new criteria (7, 8, 11, 17) are proposed.
