Abstract
In spite of a great deal of research in the field of plant water relations, opinions differ about the nature and site of primary lesions through which suboptimal water relations affect plant metabolism. Knowledge of this property is necessary not only for an understanding of the cause-and-effect interaction between water and plant metabolism, but also for any meaningful connection of plant water relations with the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC). The major task of ecophysiology is to describe, formulate, and analyze such links of plant properties and processes with the environment, a task that obviously requires the critical function of water to be known.
