Abstract
Unanswered questions exist concerning the mechanism and function of the blood pressure (BP) response in raised intracranial pressure (ICP). A number of mechanisms have been suggested, viz., ischaemia or hypoxia of medullary centres (1), brain stem distortion (2), cerebral ischemia (3), action of intracranial baroreceptors sensitive to changes in cerebral perfusion pressure (4). Furthermore, the function of the BP response is often assumed to be the preservation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) during raised ICP.
