Abstract

The association between raised ICP and changes in cardiovascular and respiratory function was described in 1878 by DURET (1) and in 1881 by NAUNYN and SCHREIBER (2). In 1902 CUSHING (3) described in the English literature the phenomenon which is now generally known as the “Cushing response”. This response consists of a decrease in pulse rate and respiratory rate with an increase in systemic arterial pressure as a reaction to an increase in ICP which approaches the level of arterial pressure.
