Abstract
The main interest in this paper is to present the data on primary production and the standing stock of phytoplankton collected during “Eltanin” cruise 46, 20 Nov. 1970–20 Jan. 1971 (El-Sayed, 1971). Efforts will be made to correlate the productivity data with the physical and chemical parameters studied. Attention should be drawn to the preliminary nature of the results presented here which will assume more meaning as a more detailed analysis of the data is completed and as additional findings are published from this multi-discipline cruise, which was a part of the U.S. Antarctic Research Program in the Southern Ocean. A total of 19 stations were occupied. Stations 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14, were occupied in pack ice (Fig. 1).
