Abstract
Pathogenic fungi can cause various needle diseases in Norway spruce (Butin 1983). At the same time, many deciduous and evergreen plants have been reported to host fungal endophytes, i.e., fungi that cause unapparent, asymptomatic infections entirely within the plant tissues (e.g., Butin 1986; Carroll 1986; Petrini 1986). However, endophytes may cause pathogenic symptoms if the host has been previously stressed by different factors (for literature review and discussion, Carroll 1986).
