Abstract
The upper Holocene of Central Europe is characterized by climatic oscillations reflected in the stratigraphic subdivisions of various sedimentary sequences. Evidence in the inland areas is provided by freshwater limestone deposits alternating with buried humus horizons. In coastal areas the record consists of sequences of alternating transgressional and regressional deposits. Changing geographic pattern of human settlements during different periods supports the link with climate oscillations. Archeological dating of settlements and of associated buried soils enables development of a relatively accurate chronologic framework, and provides evidence of moisture oscillations. Within these bounds the interval around 2000 BC belongs to a markedly dry episode of the Late Holocene, although regionally less expressed than the dry spell between the 13th and 8th centuries BC.
