Abstract
Limitation of the cell-mediated response in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, due to the reduction of T-helper lymphocyte levels, removes the main defence against Mycobacterium tuberculosis [1,2]. The resulting co-infection of AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) has become so commonplace in the USA that, in 1987, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) expanded its AIDS surveillance case definition, to include human immunodeficiency virus (HlV)-positive patients with extrapulmonary TB and, in 1993, to include HIV-positive patients with pulmonary TB or clinically suspected pulmonary TB.
