Abstract
In teleosts, usually females have separated ovaries, but in some fishes the right and left ovaries are so completely fused as to give the appearance of a single organ. The ovary connects to the body wall by a short oviduct and opens posteriorly to the anus. Eggs ovulated into ovarian cavities are spawned with the ovarian fluid out of the genital pore through the short oviduct during copulation. Males with internal fertilization have the anal fin modified into a gonopodium (genitalium) to introduce spermatozoa into the female genital tract; they do not have a penis. However, such a copulation organ is not usually found in fishes with external fertilization.
