Abstract
A devastating Tropical Cyclone (TC) with maximum sustained wind speeds of the order of 160–180 km/h caused a landfall near Porbandar on the Saurashtra coast of the state of Gujarat in India at 0230 UTC on the morning of 9 June 1998 and wreaked havoc along its track. This TC was well tracked using satellite, radar, buoys, oil rigs and coastal observatories data. The landfall was very well predicted to be near Porbandar. The two-stage alert and warning were given to the State Authorities well in time. Despite the adequate warning, the TC took a toll of about 3000 people, damaged 200000 houses, and resulted in losses worth over 700 million dollars. Unfortunately, the cyclone warnings did not reach the community level.
