Abstract

Having been invited to introduce this rather dramatic topic to you, I hope that you will find comfort in having gathered on a hill, the “Telegrafenberg” in Potsdam. Of course there is no hazard-free area on earth and life is full of risks, but you can be sure that no real earthquake, no volcanic eruption, no tropical storm and no flood from the river Havel will occur here on the hill in the near future; and for me as a geologist, “near” means the next million years.
