Abstract

In this chapter we study the effects of defects and disorder on phonons. In Sect.6.2 we introduce the Green’s function formalism, an important tool for the investigation of disordered systems. The linear chain with isolated defects is analyzed in Sect. 6.3, and in Sect. 6.4 the random binary mass chain is studied within the coherent potential approximation (CPA). We also describe cluster extensions of the CPA and a recently developed renormalization-group approach, and compare the predictions of the different approximations with numerical results. In Sect. 6.5 we introduce the T-matrix formalism and indicate how it is used to apply the CPA to three-dimensional lattices and to more complicated types of disorder. In Sect. 6.6, finally, some selected experimental results are compared with the predictions of theoretical calculations.
