Die am häufigsten verwendete Binnenschiff-Schleuse ist die Kammerschleuse (Abb. 2.1.). Sie besitzt eine nutzbare Kammerlänge LNund Kammerbreite B, die von der Größe und Art der die Kanalstrecke befahrenden Schiffseinheiten abhängen. Die Hubhöhe H wird durch die örtlich zu überwindende Gefällestufe bestimmt.
