Zusammenfassung
Das Silber hat ein flächenzentriert kubisches Gitter. Mit Hilfe einer besonders entwickelten Debye-Kammer haben W. Hume-Rothery und P.W. Reynolds1 die Gitterkonstante zwischen — 252° und 943° gemessen. Sie fanden für 20° eine Gitterkonstante von 4,0774 · 10−8 cm. Bei fallender Temperatur sinkt sie auf 4,0606 · 10−8 cm bei — 253°, bei steigender Temperatur wächst sie auf 4,1656 · 10−8 cm bei 943°. Es sind mehrfach verschiedene allotrope Modifikationen vermutet worden. Heute ist jedoch erwiesen, daß Silber nur in einer Modifikation auftritt 2.

Sehr dünne, durch Aufdampfen erhaltene Silberschichten sind außerordentlich empfindlich. Kurze Berührung mit der Atmosphäre, insbesondere geringe Mengen von Feuchtigkeit, führen zu einer raschen Zerstörung der Schichten, weshalb alle Messungen und Beobachtungen im Hochvakuum vorgenommen werden müssen. Aber auch im Vakuum beobachtet man eine langsame Alterung. Auch bei etwas stärkeren Silberfilmen sind noch Alterungserscheinungen festzustellen, die sich sowohl auf die elektrischen als auch auf die optischen Eigenschaften auswirken. Der Ablauf der Alterung ist stark von der Art der Aufbewahrung abhängig (Vakuum, Belichtung). Vgl. z. B. A. Jagersberger u. F. Schmid [Z. Phys. 88, 265, (1934); 89, 557, 564 (1934)]. Während bei nicht bearbeitetem Silber die Emanationsabgabe mit der Temperatur stetig steigt, treten bei verformten Proben Abweichungen von diesem Verlauf auf, die bei der Temperatur des Rekristallisationsbeginns aber nur gering sind und erst bei höherer Temperatur durch die Umordnung der Kristallite stärker hervortreten.
