Der umfangreiche Beitrag Erwin Rohdes zum 1. und 2. Bande dieses Handbuchs lag fast vollständig in erster Korrektur vor, als unser zukunftsreicher Freund und Mitarbeiter im Juni 1915 einer in anstrengender Lazarettätigkeit erworbenen Erkrankung zum Opfer fiel. Ich habe in Gemeinschaft mit Dr. Ph. Ellinger einiges noch Fehlende ergänzt und die Korrekturen im Sinne des Verstorbenen durchgesehen.

Dabei ist die N-Resorption nicht gestört; im 2. Versuch eher etwas verbessert. Auch die Fettresorption ist im 2. Versuch etwas selbständiger. Die Harnmenge steigt im 1. Versuch deutlich an; die P205-Kurve macht die Schwankungen der N-Ausscheidung in flacherer Kurve mit.
Auffällig könnte höchstens erscheinen, daß Oppenheim das Chinin nicht morgens nüchtern genommen hat wie die meisten anderen Untersucher (z. B. Kerner, Prior, Venediger), sondern mittags; man könnte da an eine verzögerte Resorption und protrahierte Wirkung denken. Ein Versuch an gesunden Meerschweinchen liegt auch vor, jedoch bei hoher Außentemperatur; dabei fand sich gerade umgekehrt ein starkes Sinken der Wärmebildung und ein etwas schwächeres Sinken der Wärmeabgabe. Wiederum ein Beweis für den ausschlaggebenden Einfluß der Rassenunterschiede auf den Mechanismus der antipyretischen Wirkung (vgl. Bd. I).

An dieser Stelle sei noch einmal auf dilkritischen Bedenken aufmerksam gemacht, die gegen die übliche Berechnung der Wärmeproduktion aus der beobachteten Abgabe, der Körpertemperatur und dem Körpergewicht zu erheben sind. Gerade in diesen Versuchen an fiebernden Tieren ändert sich zweifellos durch den Stich und dann durch das Antipyreticum die Blutverteilung und damit die Erwärmung der einzelnen Körperpartien so stark, daß einer Verwertung der Rectaltemperatur als Ausdruck des Wärmeinhaltes des ganzen Körpers so lange Bedenken entgegenstehen müssen, bis eine direkte Messung der Wärmebildung sie zerstreut.

Allerdings besteht der Einwand gegen diese Versuche, daß die Einschränkung der Wirmeproduktion vielleicht nicht die Folge der Chininwirkung auf den Stoffwechsel der Versuchshunde war, sondern aus einer Wirkung auf den Stoffwechsel der massenhaft im Blute lebenden Trypanosomen zu erklären wäre.

Leider sind die Temperaturen kurz vor dem Dampfbad nicht auch mitgeteilt wie beim Antipyrin; sie würden den möglichen Einwand entkräften können, daß die Personen nach Chininwirkung vielleicht mit niederer Körpertemperatur als normal ins Dampfbad gekommen sind, dann wäre es ja nicht verwunderlich, wenn die Temperatur nach 1/4 Stunde nicht so hoch wie in der Norm gestiegen ist! Beim Antipyrin hat ein solcher Einwand ja keine Berechtigung.
