Abstract

Up to now, only one borehole in the world has approached a depth comparable to the proposed KTB, i.e., the Kola SG-3 well. From the publications on this drilling project, which has also been undertaken for purely scientific purposes, many technical problems have become apparent to drilling specialists all over the world. Although the geological structures on the Kola peninsula differ from those found in Germany, similar problems will have to be expected for the KTB super-deep hole.
