Abstract
This contribution describes research on and development of real-time vision systems undertaken at the Hughes Research Laboratories over the past several years. In the course of this program our group has explored several areas germane to both software and hardware, our particular interest being the efficient and effective mapping of image analysis algorithms onto Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) hardware. We describe here a number of processing techniques we are currently exploring including a number theoretic processor Radius [7.1], a systolic architecture TOPSS-28 [7.2], and a three-dimensional microelectronic processor [7.3]. In each case we have validated our concepts by operational hardware. The intent of this paper is to provide an overview of the problems and issues inherent in applying these VLSI technologies to image analysis and where necessary we refer to the existing publications for greater detail on each topic.
