Abstract
Obstructions of the supra-aortic extracranial arteries may impede cerebral circulation and produce different neurologic symptoms. The carotid and vertebrobasilar artery systems must be considered together, because patients with lesions in one system may show clinical signs in the other (5). For example, some patients with an internal carotid artery occlusion display symptoms of vertebrobasilar insufficiency when there is a loss of compensatory potential due to impaired collateral circulation.
