Zusammenfassung
Der Diabetes mellitus ist die häufigste chronische Stoffwechselstörung des Kindes- und Jugendalters. Insgesamt leiden in Deutschland mindestens 7–8% der Bevölkerung an einem Diabetes mellitus. In allen westlichen Industrienationen nimmt die Zahl der Erkrankten in allen Altersgruppen stetig zu. Die Inzidenz der Erkrankung ist für alle Altersgruppen bei etwa 360/100.000 pro Jahr anzunehmen. In der Gruppe der über 60-Jährigen muss von einer Inzidenz von etwa 1200/100.000 pro Jahr ausgegangen werden.
