Abstract

In the late 1990s a crisis of trust in scientists, industry and the regulators was widely cited as the cause of European public resistance to agricultural biotechnologies in general and genetically modified crops and food in particular. The crisis followed various high profile failures in scientific advice and regulation leading to threats to public safety — for example, bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) in the UK, HIV contaminated blood in France, and dioxin in chickens in Belgium.
