Tuberculosis and Co-infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus

  • Chapter
Tuberculosis

Abstract

Owing to increased poverty in an overpopulated world, a lack of attention to tuberculosis services, and the impact of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) pandemic, there are more cases of tuberculosis tO’Day than at any previous time in human history. Historically, tuberculosis has been among the most feared of all diseases and has been given names such as the “Great White Plague” and “Captain of all of these Men of Death”. Most attempts to affect a cure for tuberculosis in the pre-antibiotic era were either harmful, for example blood-letting, or revolting, such as the mixture of pigeon’s faeces and weasel’s blood advocated by John of Gaddeston (1280–1361) in his Curatio Scrophulorum.
