Pleural Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis

Abstract

Tuberculous pleurisy is a common disease in developing countries and its incidence is increasing in developed countries. It is considered an extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis despite its intimate anatomical relationship with the lung parenchyma. In the United States, because of the recent increase in the incidence of tuberculosis due to the HIV epidemic and immigrants from developing endemic countries, the incidence of pleural tuberculosis has increased in parallel with, and has been found in 20% of, AIDS patients (Ankobiah et al. 1990).
