Endobronchial Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis

Abstract

Endobronchial tuberculosis is a specific form or a significant complication of pulmonary tuberculosis. It is important to remember that endobronchial tuberculosis has the following pitfalls: (1) its diagnosis is frequently delayed, since the decreased incidence itself diminishes the suspicion of tuberculosis (Greenbaum et al. 1980; Chung et al. 1991a); (2) bronchostenosis may develop as a serious complication despite efficacious antituberculosis chemotherapy (Albert and Petty 1976; Hoheisel et al. 1994; Park et al. 1997); and (3) it is often misdiagnosed as bronchial asthma (Watson and Ayres 1988; Williams et al. 1988; Park et al. 1995) or lung cancer (Matthews et al. 1984; Smith et al. 1987).
