Abstract
Mongooses, civets and genets are small and medium-sized carnivores of Africa, the Middle East and southern Asia, mainly inhabiting tropical and subtropical regions. Their body weights range from 0.45 to 14 kg, although most of them are smaller than 3–4 kg. Two species (one mongoose and one genet) have well-established natural populations on the European continent. These populations probably result from escapes of tame individuals brought into Europe in historical times by humans. One mongoose species has also been introduced to Hawaii and the Antilles.
