Zusammenfassung
Alle lebenden Zellen sind von mindestens einer in sich geschlossenen Biomembran umgeben, die das Zellinnere von der Umgebung abtrennt und somit den Stoffaustausch zwischen Zelle und Umwelt begrenzt. Damit stellt die Biomembran eine der essentiellen Grundstrukturen des Lebens dar. Die irreversible Zerstörung der Zellmembran führt unmittelbar zum Zelltod. Alle höheren Zellen haben dazu intrazelluläre Reaktionsräume (Zellorganellen) gebildet, die durch mindestens eine Biomembran begrenzt werden. In diesem Kapitel werden grundlegende Eigenschaften von Biomembranen vorgestellt.
