Zusammenfassung
Im Laufe der Kulturgeschichte der Menschheit haben sich mit zunehmender Kenntnis anatomischer Strukturen und physiologischer Mechanismen die Auffassungen über die funktionelle Bedeutung des Schmerzes verändert. Philosophische, religiöse und ethische Vorstellungen, aber auch unterschiedliche verbale und nonverbale Möglichkeiten der Kommunikation haben in allen historischen Epochen Wesens- und Sinndeutung, aber auch die Bewertung und den Umgang mit Schmerzen bestimmt. Schon die sprachliche Analyse des Phänomens Schmerz verweist auf kultur- und geisteswissenschaftliche Dimensionen, die berücksichtigt werden müssen, wenn wir uns in der Beschäftigung mit Schmerz über ein in einem besonderen Maße von Kultur bestimmtes Konstrukt zu verständigen versuchen. Schmerz als intraindividuelles bzw. soziales Kommunikationsphänomen beinhaltet soziokulturelle Zusammenhänge, deren Komplexität für Schmerzwahrnehmung, -verhalten und -erfahrung auch im Hinblick auf therapeutische Implikationen häufig nicht ausreichend beachtet wird.
