Zusammenfassung
Zunächst wird die Schmerzdenition der Internationalen Gesellschaft zum Studium des Schmerzes vorgestellt und kritisch diskutiert. Die Charakteristika des akuten und chronischen Schmerzes werden in Abgrenzung voneinander ausführlich beschrieben, da sie für das Verständnis und den Umgang mit chronischem Schmerz besonders bedeutsam sind. Das biopsychosoziale Modell des chronischen Schmerzes wird vorgestellt, wobei neben biologischen Faktoren die besondere Rolle psychosozialer Prozesse hervorgehoben wird. Die Entwicklung von Behandlungskonzepten für den chronischen Schmerz auf der Grundlage des biopsychosozialen Modells wird diskutiert.
