Abstract
Recall that a ring is called local if it has precisely one maximal ideal. One of the reasons for the interest in local rings is the idea that they describe the local behavior of a global object (such as an affine variety). A large part of the research in commutative algebra is devoted to local rings. A typical talk at a typical commutative algebra conference has the speaker start with, “Let R be a Noetherian local ring with maximal ideal m... ” Therefore it seems more than appropriate to devote the last part of this book to local rings.
