Zusammenfassung
Die Funktionalität und Ästhetik natürlicher Formen und Konstruktionen entdeckte unsere technologisch geprägte Wirtschaftswelt erst in jüngster Zeit. Dabei haben Menschen die Funktionsprinzipien der Natur in allen Kulturen schon immer intuitiv genutzt: Speicherung des Wassers mit dem Anlegen von Terrassenfeldern, Nutzung des Windes zur Trennung der Spreu vom Weizen, oder natürliche Klimatisierung von Wohngebäuden durch Erdhäuser mit Aufwindkühlung in heißen Regionen. In der Natur ist darüber hinaus Funktion zumeist eng mit einer signalaussendenden Erscheinungsform verknüpft. Erfolg durch Attraktion (z. B. bei Blumen, die durch Attraktion Insekten anlocken und somit einen Bestäubungserfolg erzielen) ist dort immanent.
