»Werde, der Du bist« – diese Kernaussage ist verbunden mit Friedrich Nietzsche, die er autobiografisch in Ecce homo-Wie man wird, was man ist (1889) ausführlich deutete. In diesem Satz spiegelt sich die gesamte Dynamik der Persönlichkeit und der Persönlichkeitsspsychologie. Der erste Teilsatz besagt, dass sich der Mensch über die Lebensspanne entwickelt, d. h. sich im Verlauf des Lebens gleichsam stabilisiert und verändert, sich im konkreten Lebensvollzug und dessen Reflektion erprobt und sich so gestaltet. Die Entwicklungsrichtung – im zweiten Teilsatz formuliert – ist durch eine gegebene Grundlage gespurt, welche der Mensch erst ergründen muss. Beide Teile zusammen besagen, dass Veränderung und Stabilisierung eine untrennbare grundlegende Qualität menschlichen Seins darstellen. Der Mensch verfügt über die Fähigkeit und hat zur Aufgabe, sich selbst zu erkennen, indem er sich beobachtet, sich im Lebensvollzug erprobt, immer wieder in Frage stellt und damit angehalten ist, sich stets neu zu definieren.
