Aus praktischen Erfahrungen der Autoren mit der Entwicklung anisotroper biokompatibler Werkstoffe werden nachfolgend Faserverbundwerkstoffe mit einer thermoplastischen Matrix behandelt. Als Faser kommt die Kohlenstofffaser, in verschiedenen Ausführungen, z. B. als HT- oder als HM-Faser, zum Einsatz (Tabelle 14.1). Kohlenstoff ist die Endstufe allen organischen Abbaus und Haupt element organischer Verbindungen. Andere grosstechnische Fasern entfallen aufgrund mangelnder Biokompatibilität, geringer Langzeitbeständigkeit, ungenü gender mechanischer Eigenschaften oder aus kommerziellen Gründen. Fasern, die dagegen von Interesse sind und sich entweder in klinischer Applikation oder in der Erforschung befinden, sind z. B. Bioglas- oder Titanfasern sowie Fasern degrada bler Polymere. Duroplastische Matrices werden hier nicht behandelt, da die Verar beitung aufwendig ist und möglicherweise toxische Additive im Bauteil zurückbleiben können. Schliesslich können Duroplaste nicht reversibel thermisch verformt werden, was die Anpassbarkeit daraus gefertigter Bauteile, wie z. B. Osteosyntheseplatten, erheblich einschränkt. Duroplastische Verbundwerkstoffe sind nur sehr aufwendig rezyklierbar, da eine Trennung von Faser und Matrix mit vertretbarem technischen Aufwand praktisch ausgeschlossen ist.
