Das Thema der Wohlbefindenspflege ist in den letzten Jahren zusehends in den Blickpunkt der Forschung und Praxis gerückt. Diese Abkehr von einer primär defizitorientierten Sicht von Störungen und deren Behandlung geht mit dem Gedanken einher, dass Wohlbefindenspflege und Prävention wichtige Alternativen zu reparativem Handeln sind. Im Rahmen der Paartherapie hat dieses Bewusstsein seit den 80-er Jahren in den USA und seit den 90-er Jahren im deutschen Sprachraum in Europa zunehmend Akzeptanz gefunden. Dies aus mehreren Gründen:

weil bekannt ist, dass Paartherapie in nur rund 50% der Fälle erfolgreich ist, da die Paare häufig zu spät in Therapie kommen,

2.
weil bekannt ist, wo angesetzt werden muss, um eine destruktive Partnerschaftsentwicklung zu verhindern (Kompetenzförderung),
-
3.
weil man davon ausgeht, dass es effizienter ist, wenn Paare Kompetenzen erwerben, solange sie dazu besonders motiviert und in der Lage sind und nicht bereits in einer tiefen Krise stecken.
