Der sehr umfangreiche Wissenschaftsbereich zur Erforschung von Therapiezielen, Lebenszielen und Werten umfasst zahlreiche Theorien und Forschungsergebnisse. Für unsere Zwecke kann hierzu nur ein grundsätzlicher Überblick gegeben werden, der pragmatisch orientiert ist. Im zweiten Teil werden exemplarisch verschiedene kognitiv-behaviorale Methoden der Imagination und Hypnose vorgestellt, mit deren Hilfe solche Ziele und Werte therapeutisch erarbeitet und umgesetzt werden.
