Zusammenfassung
Viren sind Krankheitserreger von submikroskopischer Größe ohne Kern, Zellwand und eigenen Stoffwechsel und stellen somit keine Lebewesen dar. Sie sind daher auf die Syntheseprodukte des lebenden Wirts angewiesen. Es handelt sich um obligat biotrophe Parasiten, deren Vermehrung nur in der lebenden Zelle möglich ist. Eine Besonderheit ist ferner, dass sie nur einen Typ von Nukleinsäuren enthalten, entweder DNA oder RNA. Es sind etwa 1 000 verschiedene Pflanzenviren bekannt, die weltweit in fast allen Kulturen erhebliche wirtschaftliche Schäden verursachen können. Je nach Infektionsstärke und Symptomausbildung entstehen Ernteverluste bis zu 100%.
