Zusammenfassung
Sport und körperliche Aktivität gelten seit Jahrhunderten in vielen Kulturen als gesundheitsfördernde Verhaltensweisen. Beispielsweise wurden im Griechenland der Antike gymnastische Übungen als Behandlungsmaßnahme für verschiedene Krankheiten empfohlen. Allerdings gab es auch immer wieder Stimmen, die zur Vorsicht mahnten: der berühmte Arzt Galen (ca. 200–129 v. Chr.) beobachtete bei Athleten eine erhöhte Verletzungshäufigkeit und Krankheitsanfälligkeit während der Ausübung des Wettkampfsportes. Darüber hinaus stellt er eine kürzere Lebensspanne nach Aufgabe des Sportes im Vergleich zu ihren (nicht sportlich aktiven) Zeitgenossen fest. Einer der ersten empirischen Berichte stammt von John Morgan (1873), der die Lebenserwartung von Teilnehmern am traditionellen Bootsrennen zwischen Oxford und Cambridge untersuchte und fand, dass diese im Mittel 2,2 Jahre länger lebten als dies aufgrund der zeitgenössischen Lebenserwartungstabellen zu erwarten gewesen wäre. Seit diesen Anfängen haben sich Gesundheitswissenschaftler in zunehmendem Maße mit der Frage der Auswirkungen körperlicher Aktivität auf die körperliche und psychische Gesundheit beschäftigt.
