Abstract
In the field of x-ray diffraction, the intensity and the direction of scattered waves are determined by the properties of the individual scatterers and their arrangement in space. In the special case of forward scattering, the x-ray optical properties of solids do not depend on their microscopic structure, but are entirely determined by the properties of the individual constituting atoms. If the scattering is coherent elastic, i.e., the internal state of the scattering system is unmodified in the scattering process, then a macroscopic ensemble of scatterers can be replaced by a continuous medium with an index of refraction n [1]:
